Department of Geography

About the Department:

The Department of Geography is one of the core departments of Turku Hansda Lapsa Hemram Mahavidyalay affiliated with the University of Burdwan located at Madian village, Mallarpur, Birbhum district. The department was established in 2006 to carry out undergraduate General program in Geography. Gradually the UG Honours program was introduced in 2007 and the first batch passed out in 2010. The Department of Geography envisages students’ enrichment with knowledge and skills for spatial thinking and analysis to understand real-world problems and contribute some meaningful ways for social well-being. Two Assistant Professors Three State Aided College Teachers (SACT) make up the department's teaching staff at the moment. A laboratory equipped with various instruments such as a Dumpy Level, Prismatic Compass, Auto station, Theodolite, Topographical maps, Planimeter, Rotameter, Scientific calculators, Thermometer, Hygrometer, Soil testing kits, Various types of rocks and minerals, Light tracing instruments, and others can be found in the department, along with a department library and one computer lab with four computers. The computer lab can be used with both skill-building courses and GIS software-based courses.

Vision

Turku Hansda Lapsa Hemram Mahavidyalay, is located in the rural heartland of a marginalized region of Birbhum district of West Bengal. The mission of the Department of Geography is to make geographic knowledge available to all. In keeping with this spirit, the Department works to offer a venue where nearby students can learn about the subject of geography. The department's vision aligns with the motto of "local to global" by providing students with a broad base of theoretical, practical, and applied knowledge. This will not only enable them to pursue further study and research but will also open up a variety of job prospects.

Mission

The department's goal is to develop students' minds by providing them with sufficient education and inspiration, enabling them to become independent thinkers and compassionate, forward-thinking members of society in addition to information seekers. As the college is located in a rural area of Birbhum district, we want to attract local students to the college by offering appropriate instruction and encouragement. Encouraging students to continue higher education and research is one of the department's main goals. Educating students about the variety of job opportunities available in the subject of geography through career counseling programs is one of the department's main objectives.
